STL vs STEP: which file should you download?

STL and STEP describe a 3D design differently. Choose the file that matches what you plan to do next, and keep the original download so you can return to it after edits.

Use STL when your next step is slicing

STL represents the surface as triangles. It is widely used by slicers, but it does not store a physical unit. Partvo exports use millimetres. If an importing application assumes metres, a model can appear 1,000 times too large. Check the displayed outside dimensions before scaling or printing. A file named in millimetres still needs the correct import setting.

Use STEP when your next step is CAD editing

STEP can preserve solid geometry and unit information for CAD applications. It is useful when you want to inspect faces or continue an engineering workflow. It does not necessarily preserve the original feature tree or every parameter used to create the model. A STEP download is not a guarantee that every editor can recover the design intent.

Check the part, not just the extension

1. Compare the imported width, depth and height against your brief.
2. Measure functional openings directly. An outside dimension does not establish a slot width.
3. Inspect the insertion path, wall thickness and unsupported features.
4. Preview the toolpath in your slicer and choose settings for your material and printer.

For a picture-frame stand, for example, a 70 mm foot and a 14 mm frame thickness describe different features. Neither tells you whether the frame can slide into the opening. Include the opening direction and intended clearance in the design brief.
