MCP 3D printing:
from an idea to a physical part.
By the Partvo team · Updated September 5, 2026
Partvo is building a 3D design and printing service for AI agents. The planned Model Context Protocol (MCP) workflow connects a measured brief, Astra CAD generation, reviewed files, manufacturing quotes and an explicitly approved print-and-ship order. You would not need to own a printer.
Available today: our free, open-source idea-to-part skill. In development: the hosted studio, public MCP server, REST API, verified CAD import and managed printing. Partvo does not currently accept public print orders or provide an installable remote MCP server URL.
Can an AI agent get a 3D model physically printed?
That is the workflow Partvo is developing: an agent prepares or supplies a design, resolves missing measurements, selects a suitable material and requests manufacturing options. A person or a valid spending mandate must approve the exact artifact, quote, quantity and destination before money is committed to production. A design conversation alone is not permission to order.
If you need a shipped part today, Partvo is not yet an available fulfillment option. You can use the skill to prepare the design and print brief for a service you select independently.
A printing service or a connection to your own printer?
“3D printing MCP” can describe several different tools. Choose by the outcome you need:
- Design tools: create or revise CAD and export a model. They do not necessarily manufacture it.
- Printer-control tools: connect to a printer or fleet you operate, often through systems such as OctoPrint. You still manage the machine, material and physical output.
- Print-and-ship services: arrange third-party manufacturing and delivery. Partvo’s planned MCP service belongs in this category and also includes a design workflow.
The planned Partvo MCP workflow
- Describe the part. Record units, measured dimensions, mating components, load, environment and budget. A photograph needs a known dimension to establish scale.
- Create or verify CAD. Partvo’s hosted Astra creates or revises the design. An external Astra agent may supply a part only through the verified import route when available; a model-name claim alone is insufficient.
- Inspect a version. Review the 3D model, dimensions, unresolved assumptions and exact file version. For fit-sensitive parts, plan a small test print first.
- Compare manufacturing choices. The intended choices show production country, process, material, quantity, finishing, delivery estimate and total cost. US and China options remain subject to qualification and availability.
- Approve and order. Approve the selected quote and exact artifact with confirmed payment or a bounded spending mandate. Requotes and material substitutions require renewed approval.
- Track and verify. The planned workflow returns order status and shipping information. Check delivered dimensions and fit before use.
Choosing a material starts with the use case
The free skill includes material-decision guidance. Tell the agent about heat, moisture, sunlight, loads, flexibility, surface finish and the surfaces the part must fit. It should explain candidate materials and uncertainties before selecting a process. A prototype’s appearance does not establish its strength or suitability for use.
Start with the measured design-brief checklist. The initial Partvo service is intended for ordinary, non-safety-critical prototypes and project parts.
Can I connect ChatGPT or another agent now?
You can download the skill and use it in an agent environment that supports skills and appropriate CAD tools. It is an instruction package, not a hosted connector. Partvo’s workflows use Astra for CAD creation and modification. Public MCP authentication, connection instructions, tool schemas and examples will be published on the developer page when available.
See the three workflows for people, external agents and external Astra agents. Do not send files, credentials or payments to guessed MCP endpoints.
What will it cost?
The planned hosted-design minimum is $1.98 for 5 million credits, covering $1 of Astra provider usage. Larger purchases and repeat top-ups are planned. Credits are not tokens. Physical printing, shipping and applicable taxes are separate; public checkout is not open. Using the open-source skill itself is free, although your own model and tool providers may charge.
Help shape the print-and-ship integration
Ask about MCP printing early access. Include your agent environment, part type, destination country and expected volume. Send a description first, not confidential CAD files.
